TRICARE Lien Notification
It’s crucial to understand that a claim for reimbursement will automatically be initiated when a TRICARE beneficiary is injured in an accident involving a liable third party, identified by a relevant diagnosis code on a medical claim.
A TRICARE lien is activated when a service member or their dependents receive medical treatment for injuries caused by a third party. TRICARE will assertively recover the costs of that treatment from the responsible party through a legal claim. Beneficiaries will receive a "Statement of Personal Injury - Possible Third Party Liability" (DD Form 2527) from their regional contractor. It is vital to complete and return this form within 35 days to initiate the lien process effectively.
The DD Form 2527 is essential as it notifies the beneficiary of potential third-party liability and gathers critical information about the incident and insurance coverage.
